Deciding to have an outdoor fountain is a huge commitment. But, like most things in life, if you take care of your fountain, it’ll last longer and look better. Cleaning it doesn’t have to be an excruciating process; in fact, if you do it regularly, it’ll only take a few minutes!
Here, we’ll give you the 10 essential steps to maintain it looking brand-new and a solution if you’re looking for outdoor fountain installers. Read on to find out!
10 Steps To Clean Your Outdoor Fountain
1) Don’t Underestimate Water Levels
Make sure to check the water level in the fountain frequently and add more water as needed. Remember to keep the water pump covered with water at all times. If possible, use distilled water to reduce the amount of mineral build-up on the water pump and in the fountain.
2) Look For Debris
Leaves, sticks, and other debris can fall into your fountain, so checking regularly for them is essential. Use a small net to remove any debris you find. You should also periodically clean out the basin of your fountain (where the water collects).
3) Drain The Fountain
Then, you’ll need to drain the fountain completely. Unplug the water pump before you begin. Once the fountain is empty, use a soft cloth to wipe down the inside, removing any dirt or grime. You may also want to use a small brush to get into hard-to-reach areas.
4) Keep The Pump Clean
After draining the fountain, you should clean the water pump. To remove tough mineral stains from the pump, soak it in a 50 percent solution of diluted distilled white vinegar. Then, wipe it clean with a soft cloth.
5) Clean The Pump Cover
Take off the pump cover and use your hands to clear out any substantial debris that may be inside. To clean and remove minor deposits of algae and mineral build-up in difficult-to-reach places, use an old toothbrush. In the end, replace the pump lid after a thorough rinse.
6) Use A Brush To Scrub The Fountain
To clean the inside of the fountain, use hot water, detergent, and a stiff-bristled scrub brush. You can also use vinegar to soak off mineral stains, which acts as an abrasive and will loose and lift stains.
If the fountain has severe build-up, you can use special calcium, lime, and rust removal products to restore it to its original looks. Do not use this mixture on natural copper fountains because they will remove the copper patina finish.
7) Rinse It
Once you’ve scrubbed the fountain, rinse it thoroughly with clean water. If using a hose, ensure the water pressure isn’t too intense, as this can damage the fountain. After rinsing, use a clean cloth to wipe down the inside and remove any residual soap or detergent.
8) Apply Automotive Wax
To clean powder-coated copper fountains, use automotive wax to protect the coat after cleaning and drying the fountain. Furniture polish is a great alternative to clean natural copper fountains.
9) Fill It With Distilled Water
If your fountain has a plug, replace it and fill the fountain with distilled water. Distilled water contains fewer minerals than tap water. Add a few teaspoons of chlorine bleach to tap water or use a fountain enzyme product designed to prevent mineral and algae build-up for larger fountains that need a lot of water.
10) Start The Pump
Finally, start the pump once you’ve replaced the water and plugged in the fountain. You should see clean water flowing through your fountain if everything works correctly.
