5 Common Predators In Ponds & How To Keep Them Away

Ponds are known to be the home to a diversity of wildlife, including predators and pests. While most predators will not harm humans, they can pose a threat to smaller animals such as fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Pests, on the other hand, can cause damage to plant life and spread diseases.

If you want to protect your pond from these dangers, it’s essential to take some preventative measures. Read on to learn more about this!

1) Aphids

Aphids are small pests that love to eat leafy greens. They suck sap from your plants, which can damage them. If you have a problem with aphids, you can try spraying your plants with water or removing the aphids yourself. You can also release ladybugs to eat the aphids.

2) Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes love to lay their eggs in still water. If you keep the surface of your pond constantly moving, they won’t be able to do this. If mosquitoes lay eggs in your pond, goldfish, mosquito fish, minnows, and guppies can eat the larvae when they hatch.

3) Snails

If your pond is full of native snails, you can remove them by hand. Pick them up and move them somewhere else. Put some lettuce leaves on the water’s surface and wait for the snails to come to eat them.

Once they are all gathered on the leaves, you can take them away. If your pond has non-invasive snails, you need to be careful when removing them, so you don’t damage any of the other plants or animals in your pond.

4) Aquatic Leaf Beetles

Aquatic leaf beetles can damage plants both in and out of the pond. Adults eat leaves from water-based plants, while larvae feed on underwater vegetation. Adult flies may be washed off of plants using a hose or drenching them with water to eliminate the larvae.

5) Slugs

Slugs can become a problem near a pond. Frogs and newts are their natural predators. Surround your pond plants with sand to stop slugs from getting to your plants.

Slugs don’t like copper. So, you can use copper wires or pennies to stop slugs from eating your plants. Strong mint, chives, garlic, fennel, foxgloves, and geraniums also help to stop this predator.

Why You Should Keep Pests Under Control

Pests can be a major nuisance around ponds. Not only do they interfere with the environment, but they can also bring diseases and illnesses. This can lead to a decline in plant life and, ultimately, the death of your pond.

Tips To Avoid Predators In Your Pond

1) Hide Your Fish With Plants

Plants not only provide oxygen for your fish, but they also offer protection from predators. When choosing plants for your pond, include a mix of floating, submerged, and marginal plants. Floating plants like water lilies will shade your fish from the sun and help keep the water cool.

2) Consider Pond Edging

Many predators that hunt fish stalk them from the edge of the pond. A higher edge with steep sides makes it harder for these predators to get in and out of the pond easily. This will also make it harder for animals that fall into the water to escape.

You can make the edge of your pond harder for these animals to hunt by using plants like bamboo and other border plants, as well as tall grass.

3) Build Refuge Spots

Refuge spots are places where your fish can go to escape predators. These could be submerged boulders, black PVC, or even something as simple as an overturned flowerpot. Be sure to include a variety of refuge spots in your pond so that all of your fish can find a safe place to hide.
