If you’re like most pond owners, koi are your pride and joy, so it’s nice knowing that they enjoyed a full day of swimming around in ponds or mud puddles. At night, they’re probably tucked into a cozy spot under the rocks or logs at the bottom of your pond, where you’ll find them sleeping before another day of playtime in the water.

The seasonal weather changes will affect the health of your fish. Pond fish are living creatures. They rely on you for their food and water, so it’s important to take care of them properly. The best way to do that is by feeding them the right foods at the right time. This way, they will stay healthy, and you will balance your pond environment.

Each Season Is Different

The most important thing about feeding your pond fish is making sure they get what they need when they need it! If you’re not careful, your koi could end up with parasites because of lack of nutrition or even starve to death if you wait too long between feedings. Each season calls for different types of food and different feeding schedules.

Important Facts To Have In Mind

  1. One of the first things you’ll notice as summer turns into fall and then winter is that your koi’s appetite changes. In the beginning, they might not be so keen on eating, but as days get shorter and water temperatures drop, these fish will gravitate toward any source of food they can find.
  2. As the water cools, you’ll need to switch from live or frozen foods to pellets. You might notice that your koi are turning their noses up at the same old diet in favor of some algae growing in corners and crevices near the bottom of your pond. This alga is very nutritious for them. You can break off pieces and toss them into the koi’s favorite spots.
  3. When the temperatures get colder, your fish will need more energy to stay warm. That means they’ll want more food than you were giving them in warmer months. That’s why it is important to watch what type of food your koi are eating. If they’re not eating the pellets, there must be something wrong.
  4. If you have a pond thermometer, check the water temperature in different areas of your yard or garden to understand how cold it is outside. You can also see what’s happening by observing the way your fish behave. Just remember that this is their winter home. They need enough food to sustain themselves through the winter.
