A backyard pond is a great way to spruce up your home’s landscaping. However, it’s known that ponds attract insects. Some of these are harmless, and others shouldn’t be around.

The best way to take care of this problem is to educate ourselves about what’s living there. Here’s a list of common insects that live near ponds and their characteristics; read on.

1) Mosquitoes

These are one of the most common insects near ponds. They’re also known to be disease carriers; for this reason, they shouldn’t be around. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so keeping your pond clean and debris-free is essential.

Mosquitoes are small, dark-colored insects with six legs. They have a long, thin body and a pair of wings.

2) Midges

Midge larvae are part of the order Diptera, but they’re in the Chironomidae family. Midge larvae consume smaller larvae, rotting matter, and microorganisms. Also, they’re an essential component of a pond’s food web.

3) Mayflies

Mayflies, a member of the Ephemeroptera order, can be found near backyard ponds’ clean, fresh, and flowing water. The morphology of the nymphs varies according to their habitat. Mayflies are the only insects with a winged immature stage. Also, they have two adult stages. Their wings are clean and lustrous in the second adult stage.

4) Water Striders

The common water strider, also known as Hemiptera, is a wingless aquatic insect that looks like a giant mosquito. A water strider has six legs and can reach a length of slightly over 1/2 inch. Its body is long, dark brown or black, and has six legs.

The water strider can walk across the water’s surface without falling through the water thanks to the design of its legs and its lightweight.

5) Damselflies and Dragonflies

Both dragonflies and damselflies belong to the Odonata order and feature long, slender abdomens and membranous wings. These insects’ nymphs can be found in ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams. Dragonflies and damselflies can see almost in all directions because of their big eyes.
